Becoming Catholic (OCIA)

Becoming CAtholic

The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults

The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults, or OCIA, is the process of conversion through which adults come to greater knowledge of God, his love for them, and his plan for their life. This process is comprised of various stages beginning with initial discovery and exploration of the Catholic Faith and culminating with the reception of the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. Each person's journey of faith is unique and we are here to support you wherever you are on your journey.

In OCIA you will have the opportunity to ask questions in a relaxed and supportive environment without any pressure alongside others on the same journey and learn the fundamental beliefs and practices of the Catholic Faith. The duration of each person's journey through OCIA can vary depending on many factors. There is a minimum of one year of formation in the catechumenate before receiving the sacraments which are normally conferred at Easter or Pentecost. Since each person's circumstances are different it is important that you contact us about your own personal situation.

Who is OCIA for?

OCIA is for anyone interested in learning more about the Catholic Faith, for non-Catholics seeking to become Catholic, and for Catholic adults in need of First Communion and/or Confirmation. Catholics returning to the practice of their faith are welcome to join us as well.

How do I begin?

For more information about OCIA, or to begin the process, please contact Nicole Filipowski, Director of Faith Formation, at 703-590-0256 or online here.
